In the first part of the book many cruel things happened to Gerda and her family. If I was in her position, I don’t know how I would have handled it. It is hard to imagine that your life could be perfectly normal one day and in a short period of time everything would change. I was impressed in the way Gerda coped with it. I believe that this showed how strong of a person Gerda is. I feel that one of the worst things that happened to Gerda was the separation of her family. The image of Gerda inside the truck being driven away from her mom impacted me greatly. While being driven away from her mom, Gerda’s mom says “Be strong” (page 92). These words made this passage stand out to me. Another cruel event that happened to Gerda is when her family was forced to move out of their home. I could not imagine what that would have felt like.
